The Importance of Openness in Leadership
As a leader, are you open or closed to change and the work of innovation? A few weeks ago, I found myself struggling with an exam (yes, I still take tests). I'm usually a good test-taker. I know that answers can often be determined by how the question is phrased. For example, "are" implies multiple answers, while "is" implies one. I had to retake the test twice because I wasn't open to the possibility of more than one answer.
When we consider possible answers, unless the question explicitly states 'multiple choice' or 'select all that apply,' we might assume there is only one correct answer. My struggle that day helped me realize that I was failing because I was not open to other possible answers. Could you be facing an ongoing leadership challenge because you are closed to other possibilities?
Navigating the BANI World
I don't need to remind you that the times we are leading in often require divergent ways of connecting and responding to challenges. As a leader, how will you manage the demands of a BANI world (see previous blogs on that) while creating work that succeeds?
Questions to Reflect On
Here are some questions to help you assess your openness to alternative answers to your leadership challenges:
Leadership is not just about plans; it's about people. Are you open to those who think differently than you? When was the last time you seriously advanced an idea or strategy that came from someone who doesn't think like you?
What in your 2026 strategic plan looks different from 2025? Has your strategy been to keep your head down and avoid making waves? While that approach may seem safe given the changes we are experiencing, how effective has it been for you?
Which projects are you so attached to that you struggle to shift resources away from them? Can you identify why a pet project didn't work? What will you do differently now?

The Power of Multiple Solutions
Whether we are discussing people, plans, or projects, remember that there is more than one possible solution to your dilemma. Cultivating a mindset that is open to other possibilities will give your team and organization another tool to innovate through the challenges of a BANI environment.
Building a Culture of Innovation
Encouraging Diverse Perspectives
To foster innovation, it's essential to create an environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed. Encourage your team to share their ideas, even if they differ from your own. This can lead to breakthroughs that you might not have considered otherwise.
Embracing Feedback
Feedback is a powerful tool for growth. Regularly seek input from your team on your leadership style and decision-making processes. Be open to constructive criticism and use it to refine your approach.
Continuous Learning
As a leader, commit to continuous learning. Attend workshops, read books, and engage with thought leaders in your field. This will help you stay informed about new ideas and trends that can benefit your organization.
Conclusion
In today's rapidly changing world, being open to change and innovation is crucial for effective leadership. By embracing diverse perspectives, encouraging feedback, and committing to continuous learning, you can navigate the complexities of a BANI environment. Remember, there is always more than one way to solve a problem. Stay open, stay curious, and lead your team to success.
