Embracing Change: How to Use Discomfort as a Catalyst for Learning and Growth

"Ahem.." Taps mic: Is anybody uncomfortable?"

How long has it been since you were downright nervous?  I know that you’re so good at what you do that you might not remember but just try for a moment.  If you think back to another time when you were really scared and you kept going, you learned something about yourself and your possibilities.

It’s time to learn again. Places of discomfort and challenge give us the ability to develop muscle that we might not otherwise find. We learn to navigate around what is blocking us, or we find the strength to tunnel through it. We learn a different way of doing business, perhaps even discovering a new market for that business. Backed up against the wall, we are forced to take inventory of who we really are and the power that lives within us.

So, learn again. Here are four points to help you get there.

Consider: First, thoroughly examine the challenge you are experiencing. Next attempt to view that challenge from a different angle. Finally, consider what opportunities might be available if you shift how you view the challenge.

Capacity: How much room or time do you have to continue on a road that is coming to an end? Do you have the capacity to keep building, or is there a fork in the road that could profitably lead you into a new direction?

Commitment: Once you see an opportunity, commit to pursuing it wholeheartedly. That’s why the capacity question is important. A halfhearted effort might not get you where you want to go.  If you see a real opportunity, commit — don’t play with it.

Contribute: No matter who you are or how long you have been here, if you’re still breathing, you have something to contribute. Find what has been untapped in you and use the new emotional muscle to shift into a new way of being.
